The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation adult parole division and BI Incorporated, the operator of several CDCR day reporting centers, hosted a commencement ceremony—called a Transition Celebration—on Feb. 25 for parolees referred to the Stockton Day Reporting Center. The CDCR and BI honored 12 parolees during the celebration. Nearly 100 guests attended, including several Stockton-area officials, families and corrections professionals.
Representatives for State Senator Lois Wolk and U.S. Representatives Dennis Cordova and Jerry McNerney distributed certificates of recognition to each parolee for successfully fulfilling all program requirements. Program alumna Pete Lopez gave the keynote address. During his speech, Lopez explained how the day reporting center gave him a positive place to be, which is why he still comes back to visit even though he completed the program in October. Lopez said that participating in the program helped him establish a stronger foundation for decision making. CDCR Region 1 Parole District administrator Dave McAuley also addressed the group.
To successfully complete the program, participants completed Moral Reconation Therapy®, a cognitive behavioral program developed to reduce recidivism and change criminal behavior, stayed “clean” for 90 days and participated in 90 percent of their prescribed group meetings. In addition, participants had to be employed or enrolled in school and paying for their own room and board to participate in a transition celebration. Open seven days a week, the Stockton Day Reporting Center opened in May 2008, and was established to ease prison overcrowding and reduce recidivism rates among adult parolees. The center supervises an average of 80 parolees daily.
