New Software Promises Accurate Sentencing for Nebraska Prisoners
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services will start using new software to calculate inmate sentences more accurately.
“When we give them a date, it will be the correct date,” corrections director Scott Frakes said. “It takes out the human element. And that’s significant.”
The upgrade comes after news emerged in 2014 that hundreds of inmates had their sentences miscalculated.
“There’s one person who got out seven days later than originally anticipated,” Frakes said.
More than 560 state prisoners were released months, or in some cases, years before their prison term was to expire because the department was using an incorrect formula to calculate mandatory minimum sentences.
