Study Ranks Montana 40th for Lenient DUI Laws

HELENA — A survey released Wednesday ranked Montana as the 40th most-lenient state when it comes to drunken-driving laws, but officials say it’s a big improvement from the past in a state with a “long and difficult history” where drinking and driving was part of the roadway culture.

WalletHub, a personal website, ranked Arizona as the state with toughest restrictions and South Dakota ranked 51st, just below the District of Columbia.

WalletHub said it analyzed the enforcement rules in each state and the District of Columbia measuring 15 key metrics, ranging from fines and minimum jail sentences to ignition-interlock device requirements that reduce arrests of previously convicted drunken drivers.
